Abstract: Recommendation Systems are widely used in many industries. In this talk, Afsoon will introduce the media landscape, the various data products that media companies use, alongwith a deep dive into recommendation systems for news. Afsoon will further present how data is used to inform, entertain and enlighten Canadians at CBC, while also discussing the daily functions of data scientists for delivering on products and their success criteria.

Speakers’ Bio: Afsoon has a PhD in Physics from Washington State University and is currently leading machine learning developers and Data Scientist in CBC to develop data-driven systems for CBC contents. Afsoon co-founded an award winning software company, IRYStec, which was acquired by Faurencia. As a tech leader, she led a multidisciplinary team of researchers and developers on technology commercialization and developing ML products for B2B and B2C use cases. As a leader with significant experience in team building, and people development, she empowers teams to make good decisions, build alignments, and elevate engagement with her technology vision across a team and an organization. Afsoon is passionate about empowering women, specifically in science and technology. She volunteers her time for mentoring founders and individuals in their growth.
