The Women in Big Data Toronto Whats for Lunch? Podcast Club is back for a second session on Thursday 26th November, 12:15 to 1pm EST.
How does it work? Well, instead of a traditional book club where you would read and discuss books, we’ll listen to podcasts and come together virtually to discuss them. Sessions will be done over video chat with a moderator.
For this month’s session, we’ve selected the “Oh, Algorithms!” episode from the CBC Spark podcast hosted by Nora Young. This episode focuses on the difficulties with incorporating fairness in algorithms and touches on a variety of examples of where algorithms have resulted in unintended consequences.
Several speakers are interviewed in the episode including:
– Sidney Fussell, a technology journalist at WIRED who looks at issues in machine learning, surveillance, and the abuse of data.
– Brian Christian, an AI authority and the author of the new book, The Alignment Problem: Machine Learning and Human Values. He explains why coding social value isn’t as simple as telling a program to ignore variables like race and gender.
– Rediet Abebe is a computer scientist and co-founder of Mechanism Design for Social Good. She explains how we can design systems to create opportunity and avoid bias.
Interested in participating in our discussion on the episode? Sign up via Eventbrite by November 24th. Space is limited!
