Title: The New Era of AI and its Safety Risks

Abstract: In the last 18 months, AI has turned a corner. We no longer live in a world where AIs can only perform the specific, narrow tasks they were explicitly trained to do. It’s becoming clear that the key to moving beyond narrow AI and toward general, flexible AI may simply be scale: larger models using more processing power, trained on more data. This has sparked a scaling race across the AI industry. The result has been AI systems with unprecedented capabilities — systems like OpenAI’s GPT-3 and DALL-E — which create new public safety risks that Canada and other advanced countries have yet to come to terms with. Malicious use of AI and accident risk are rapidly becoming the most important untracked challenges we face. That’s something that we’ll have to change if we want AI to continue to make our lives better in the long run.

Biography: Jeremie Harris is the co-founder of SharpestMinds, the world’s largest mentorship platform powered by income share agreements. He has advised senior US Defense officials, including the former Head of AI Policy at the Pentagon, and Canadian political leaders on AI risk. He also hosts the official podcast for Towards Data Science, one of Medium’s largest publications.
