Talk 1: Building iOS apps as an indie developer

Speaker: Marius Caciulescu

Summary:

You may have had an idea for an app but you thought it’s too difficult to implement it. It’s not, and you should try it, and if you like it you can try to make a living from building apps.

In this talk, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of being an iOS independent developer and the challenges of getting started. We’ll take a look at what are the best iOS frameworks for making a new app, what are the minimum requirements for a good indie app, but also non-technical aspects, like getting started by yourself, promoting your apps and being part of the iOS community.

Bio: Marius Caciulescu is a software engineer with more than 9 years of experience in the field. He was a team lead and software architect in an educational non-profit company before deciding to change fields and start an independent career in iOS development.

Talk 2: Working effectively as a cross-platform developer

Speaker: Graham Lee

Summary:
Having focussed on the Apple platform from early Mac OS X to now, it’s fair to say that most of my expertise is in the iOS stack (and the vintage parts, like Objective-C).

But more and more projects that come my way demand cross-platform delivery, as people want to go where their customers are and businesses want employees to be productive on their own devices.

In this talk, I’ll share some of the technology and workflow tricks I’ve used to adapt to this landscape where deep platform expertise has become less important to focus on than quickly delivering valuable software to anyone who needs it.

Bio: Graham Lee is a research software engineer in Oxford University. Having grown to love Objective-C in his undergraduate NeXTSTEP computing lab, he has spent most of his career writing Mac and iOS software but has always had a soft spot for Linux too… and the Amiga.
