Job Description

 

1000ml Inc. is looking for a dynamic and driven Data Science Mentor to work occasionally as part of our Toronto Mentorship Program, leading Mentees through a very rigorous set of projects that enables a paradigm shift in their thinking and a newfound professionalism. The program, an intensive 20-week post-graduate training Residency, helps top quantitative STEM graduates and working professionals to transition from academia to careers in data science and AI. Since launching our Toronto office in 2019, Residents from the program have joined top data teams in the last year, at companies like Scotiabank, Loblaw Digital, Mejuri, Shopify, Google, and many more. 1000ml’s program helps Residents (or Mentees) to build on their expertise while learning industry best practices from our Mentors, Data Partnerships (companies), Not for Profits (through a partnership with Data for Good and DataKind) and our network of 1000ml alumni.

Our Program is fully LIVE, in office and in person.  We are very strong believers that teams of Data Science professionals need to be working together very closely to really provide superior business value in the work they do.  In Toronto, our office is headquartered at College and Spadina and you would need to be able to be there for your contract(s).

The Data Science Mentor will be responsible for enabling fundamental changes in our Mentees and guiding them through projects (real projects from our Industry partnerships) from definition through to insight delivery / presentation, providing an amazing Residency experience, and working with every Resident (and our staff) to find a position that’s right for them.

To succeed in this role, you must be excited to lead, teach and mentor, be an excellent communicator, and have a background in data science, the tech industry, and have real demonstrable industry experience in your craft. The Mentor will work primarily with the Mentees in the Toronto Program, but will be on a collaborative team distributed worldwide

This role does not require travel.

Responsibilities

  • Are as passionate about running Data Science projects and leading new data professionals / mentees as you are about Data Science itself

  • Are the rare combination of programming / development / engineering, statistics and storytelling skills

  • Are proficient in the project topics of at least three of our projects styles / types

  • Are available for a minimum of three (3) days at a time, six (6) hours per day

  • Meets with Mentees to help them set and achieve learning goals through 1000ml defined projects

  • Answer subject matter questions

  • Provide feedback on data acquisition, data hygiene, data engineering, general engineering and development practices, modeling and experimentation, and projects and presentation

  • Have at least 5 years of experience solving real-life data science problems, and are comfortable working with large data sets

  • Are empathetic, inspirational, aspriational and have excellent communication skills

  • Suggest project and/or curriculum changes

  • Find new methods of delivering core concepts

  • Documents heavily and is a great team player

Communication

The Mentor will be the face of 1000ml to many of our Mentees in many forums, including: internal and external emails, project completion, retrospectives and portfolio development, and facilitating group discussions and presentations. You should have excellent communication skills, including the ability to deliver thoughtful feedback.

Education/Background

You have a scientific and/or engineering background and can effectively empathize with, understand, and lead Residents/Mentees. Additionally, you have experience with data science and/or the tech industry sufficient to facilitate project-based learning.
