How does a large organization build a Data Mesh from the ground up? Let’s explore how PayPal is evolving its data architecture and sharing best practices and guidance for your own implementation.

In late 2021, we started building this incredible new Data Mesh platform. Over the years, PayPal has gathered a tremendous amount of data. With over 432 million active accounts and $337 billion total payment volume as of Q3 2022 (source: PayPal investor report), you can imagine that data is growing at a significant pace.

The need for a verticalized data platform was obvious. This strategic platform should focus on risk, credit, business opportunities, and helping the future strategies at PayPal. However, what is the solution? A new Data Lake? A Lakehouse? The answer will surprise you.

In this talk, I will start with the original vision. I will share how the concept evolved over time, what we built, how we leveraged the cloud, and some of the nuggets found on the way.
